The A walk will be led by Sue and Andrew Holden, it is a circular from Askham 12.2 miles 2000ft of ascent.
Starting at Askham head SW out of the village climbing to Heughscar Hill before turning south to The Cockpit. Heading SW onto Barton Fell climbing White Knott, Arthur's Pike and Bonscale Fell before continuing south to summit Loadpot Hill, the highest point of the walk at 672m (2201ft). Turn N to return to Askham following High Street bridleway via The Cockpit, Ketley Gate and Askham Fell. One gate, no stiles and three Wainwrights.
Norma and Carol's B walk is a 7 mile circular, starting on the main road going in a northerly direction with a steep climb which merges onto the grassland of Askham Fell, still steadily climbing for about the first hour, when we start to wander across the fell turning southerly and heading for the village of Helton, continuing easterly down a narrow footpath towards the hamlet of Whale. Now returning northerly parallel to the River Lowther, skirting the boundaries of Lowther Park and alongside woodland, these good paths end at the road and over the bridge and back into Askham with 777ft of ascent.
The C walk will be led by David Bolster. Approximately 5 ½ miles and 400 feet. This is a walk with lots of historical interest. We begin with the ancient border crossing of Eamont Bridge, then go along to visit neolithic Mayburgh Henge followed by misnamed 'King Arthur's Round Table'. Then we move forward in history, entering the Lowther estate, under the Victorian viaduct, through the campsite and follow the Lowther river to Lowther Church and Castle. (There might be time for people who wish to pay the entrance fee, to visit Lowther castle and grounds. But it will not be part of this walk). Finally we cross Askham bridge and climb the final 100 feet through the village.
